Quote: "Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and feed him as long as the fish supply holds out. But create a collective, and every man will learn how to feed himself for a lifetime". (Location 621: Kindle Cloud Reader) This quote exemplifies that as educators their needs to be a time where students learn from their surroundings, peers, and even their community. In my lifetime, I have learned the most when I discover new things and explore things that I did not believe I was capable of.
Question: What if the community is preventing an individual from becoming a collective?
Connection: This chapter talks about giving a collective the freedom to learn about their experiences. In our clinical studies, we are constantly learning about our experiences as teachers. This is a great form to get us to understand what its like to be a teacher. Also, EDSS 530 is constantly teaching us about the different technologies that are beneficial in our classrooms. It is helpful to be able to try new things in order to see if they are helpful for our teaching career.
Epiphany/ Aha: One can now access information through a computer or access to a computer without owning a television station or printing press.
Chapter 5: THE PERSONAL WITH THE COLLECTIVE
Quote: "One of the greatest concerns about digital media today is that it may be rendering our lives too transparent. Almost every new media application provides some way to share information with friends, coworkers, or an audience". This quote represents the fact that some people have not yet become intrigued at the fact that technology is a great tool for professionals. Individuals are scared to be known by others in a personal manner and like to live in a private world.
Question: How can we protect our privacy on the internet?
Connection: This chapter talks about "Collectives" sharing values and beliefs about the world and who engage in a set of shared practices. This is a great connection of what we are doing in our EDSS 530 class, where we are getting to know people of our subjects (e.g.,Physical Education) on Twitter to share ideas that will help us in our teaching career.
Epiphany/Aha: I found it simply amazing that a group of students would design a Facebook page to help each other in a particular class. This is a great example of a collective that has changed in relations to the world around them. Sometimes, we have to take what we have and embrace it.
Chapter 6: WE KNOW MORE THAN WE CAN SAY
Quote: "Because our minds, bodies, and senses are always learning, we pick up vast amounts of tacit knowledge just by doing about our everyday activities--unlike learning through formal education, which takes place during specified, focused, brief periods of time." I chose this quote because I find it ironic that the things I learned in college I don't seem to remember unless I practice or do on a daily basis.
Question: Students want answers and are programmed that way in most cases because all through their school years they are accustomed to be given the answer. Therefore, how can we get rid of this notion and make our students inquire about everything they observe in life?
Connection: This chapter is a perfect connection to our 20% project that we are doing for our EDSS 530 class. We have to come up with questions that will help us learn and provide an understanding of what to expect when dealing with an obstacle that we have failed in the past.
Epiphany/Aha: We learn best when we follow our passion but yet discovering our passion can be complicated.
