After having practice and researching about paddle boarding, I feel like I have plenty of learning to do but I have found a new sport that will keep me active. My end goal was to be able to paddle board without falling for a good distance and I did so. I still have room for improvement because my form is not where it needs to be. I am still leaning forward and scared to fall at times. I need to be more relaxed and learn how to change directions when paddle boarding. There was a point where a boat was coming my way and I couldn't change directions so I stopped paddle boarding. I felt like diving into the water but I wasn't going fast enough to get in the way of the boat. Overall, I will continue to find great places to paddle board and know more about the sport.
The History of Paddle BoardingI can imagine people in the past paddle boarding in search of food or to get to a destination that requires to pass a river, ocean, or lake. I'm sure these people did not look at paddle boarding as a sport but more of something that was needed to do to reach their end goal. Sometimes I feel that the world we live in is lazy because we now have cars, motorcycles, and trucks to get us to where we want to go. According to Supworldmagazine, Ancient cultures from Africa to South America used boards, canoes, and other watercraft propelled with a long stick to fish, travel, make war, and even ride waves. Warriors in parts of Africa stoop up in dugout canoes and used their spears as paddles to move silently into enemy territory." I don't think no one knows when paddle boarding was first started but it sure had a great amount of purpose. Now people just see this sport as something fun to do on the weekend. I am beginning to find this sport more intriguing every minute I find more information on paddle boarding.
Benefits of Paddle BoardingSince I am a physical education teacher, I wanted to research the benefits of paddle boarding. At first, when paddle boarding I realized that the next day I felt sore throughout my body. I felt tired and exhausted when paddle boarding for distance the second time I tried it at Harbor Beach (Oceanside, CA). It is to my understanding that this sport is a full body workout. This sport is great for the core because one is constantly trying to maintain balance and it does wonders for the body because it requires the legs and the torso to be in constant motion. People's overall health and fitness levels will increase and become more energetic throughout the day. In addition, an article that I came across that provides evidence of these benefits helped me understand what paddle boarding does to our body.

Does your idea have elements of knowledge, play, and making in it? My idea has elements of knowledge, play, and making in it because I will get to have fun out in the sun. Whenever there is a chance of going to the beach and practicing how to paddle board sounds to me like a whole lot of fun. This idea can be challenging but it can be achievable. This idea will take some time to understand and grasp since I've never tried paddle boarding my whole life besides the only time in Cabo San Lucas. I have decided to start my 20% project by going to Harbor Beach located in Oceanside, CA. It has been hard having to find a place that is cheap but when working at the Y. I came across a lady that referred me to this place that only charges $15 dollars a session. George was a great instructor and helpful! I realized that paddle boarding wasn't as hard as I thought. It was maybe because the waves were not as strong as the last time I went paddle boarding at Cabo San Lucas. I was still a little bit scared to fall but I was able to paddle board for a good distance without falling. At first, I started on my knees just to get comfortable and later I got on my feet to see if I can stay balanced when paddle boarding and I did pretty good for a beginner. I have decided that in the long run I will take this growing sport more serious since it is a good workout. |
