Final Reflection- Paddle Boarding

5/9/2015

After having practice and researching about paddle boarding, I feel like I have plenty of learning to do but I have found a new sport that will keep me active. My end goal was to be able to paddle board without falling for a good distance and I did so.  I still have room for improvement because my form is not where it needs to be. I am still leaning forward and scared to fall at times. I need to be more relaxed and learn how to change directions when paddle boarding. There was a point where a boat was coming my way and I couldn't change directions so I stopped paddle boarding. I felt like diving into the water but I wasn't going fast enough to get in the way of the boat. Overall, I will continue to find great places to paddle board and know more about the sport.

The History of Paddle Boarding

Picture
I can imagine people in the past paddle boarding in search of food or to get to a destination that requires to pass a river, ocean, or lake. I'm sure these people did not look at paddle boarding as a sport but more of something that was needed to do to reach their end goal. Sometimes I feel that the world we live in is lazy because we now have cars, motorcycles, and trucks to get us to where we want to go. According to Supworldmagazine, Ancient cultures from Africa to South America used boards, canoes, and other watercraft propelled with a long stick to fish, travel, make war, and even ride waves. Warriors in parts of Africa stoop up in dugout canoes and used their spears as paddles to move silently into enemy territory." I don't think no one knows when paddle boarding was first started but it sure had a great amount of purpose. Now people just see this sport as something fun to do on the weekend. I am beginning to find this sport more intriguing every minute I find more information on paddle boarding.

Benefits of Paddle Boarding

Since I am a physical education teacher, I wanted to research the benefits of paddle boarding. At first, when paddle boarding I realized that the next day I felt sore throughout my body. I felt tired and exhausted when paddle boarding for distance the second time I tried it at Harbor Beach (Oceanside, CA). It is to my understanding that this sport is a full body workout. This sport is great for the core because one is constantly trying to maintain balance and it does wonders for the body because it requires the legs and the torso to be in constant motion. People's overall health and fitness levels will increase and become more energetic throughout the day. In addition, an article that I came across that provides evidence of these benefits helped me understand what paddle boarding does to our body.

Common Mistakes While Paddle Boarding

Common mistakes that people make while paddle boarding is when they have the blade facing backwards, it will take an individual forever to paddle. When holding the paddle hands need to be wider than shoulders width apart and don't paddle past your feet. When I first tried paddle boarding, I did not use my legs and I tend to lean forward as oppose to being relaxed. Another mistake I made was looking down instead of looking ahead when paddling. I noticed it made me lose my balance and at times I would fall. Another mistake I made was paddling way past my feet and all it did was get me tired. In addition, I noticed it did not get me further.

When researching this project I found a great article that explains on how to remain balanced when the waves are hitting your board. "One of the most common problems is when paddlers fight the roll of the water. Keeping your body stiff will put you into the water faster, being relaxed will make your paddling experience easier. The ocean is going to constantly move the board beneath you, so why fight it? You must keep your balance in your core, allowing your legs to absorb the roll and rock from the ocean much like the shocks on a bicycle. And move your feet! Being comfortable wiggling those toes will make you more stable and present."

Top Places in San Diego to Paddle Board

Since, I wasn't sure at first where to find great places in San Diego to paddle board I gather some resources that I collected on Diigo and it has been rewarding to find places such as La Jolla Cove, Coronado Island (Tidelands Park), and Mission Bay (Bahia Hotel Santa Barbara Cove)  to have one of the greatest site scenes while paddle boarding. I know that once I am done with student teaching and have more time to myself I will definitely be paying a visit to these places.
1. La Jolla Cove- from looking at pictures this place looks amazing to be able to paddle board. I have become intrigued in getting to learn the sport of paddle boarding since it is relaxing and this place makes me want to learn even more. There is cliffs and caves along the shorelines with an amazing view beneath the water.

2. Coronado Island (Tidelands Park)- this place is great because you get to see ferrys passing along and people tend to greet those that are paddle boarding. When paddle boarding people may get to see stingrays and halibuts when lucky. When paddle boarding, people get to go see the bridge, San Diego's skyline and military ships. This island is one of San Diego's best kept secret.
3. Mission Bay (Bahia Hotel Santa Barbara Cove)- this place is located by the San Diego Airport. According to this article, "One of my favorite coves is the Santa Barbara cove just because it's easy to access with parking right across the road. The cove is protected on 3 sides so it's usually very calm even on windy days especially near the shoreline. And it's just across from the famous Wavehouse (artificial standing wave) along with its amusement parks and roller coaster."

Paddle Boarding

When going to Cabo San Lucas last spring, I tried paddle boarding and I was horrible at it. I kept on falling every time I got up. It was fun but I want to be able to paddle without descending into the water like a fool. It is going to be a challenge but it is a task that I am looking forward to.
Inquiry: How many authentic questions (those that you truly do not know the answer to) can you come up with around your topic?
1. What are the steps when paddle boarding?
2. When paddle boarding are the waves a big factor?
3. How long will it take to master this skill?
4. Am I setup for failure?
5. If I learn to paddle board, would it be easy to learn surfing?
6. What exercise can I implement to maintain balance?
7. Where can I learn to paddle board?
8. Should I get a coach for this?
9. Can I learn on my own?
10. How can I choose a decent paddle board?

What would a successful learning outcome look like? Being able to paddle for the entire time without falling into the water.

Does your idea have elements of knowledge, play, and making in it? My idea has elements of knowledge, play, and making in it because I will get to have fun out in the sun. Whenever there is a chance of going to the beach and practicing how to paddle board sounds to me like a whole lot of fun. This idea can be challenging but it can be achievable. This idea will take some time to understand and grasp since I've never tried paddle boarding my whole life besides the only time in Cabo San Lucas.

I have decided to start my 20% project by going to Harbor Beach located in Oceanside, CA. It has been hard having to find a place that is cheap but when working at the Y. I came across a lady that referred me to this place that only charges $15 dollars a session. George was a great instructor and helpful! I realized that paddle boarding wasn't as hard as I thought. It was maybe because the waves were not as strong as the last time I went paddle boarding at Cabo San Lucas. I was still a little bit scared to fall but I was able to paddle board for a good distance without falling. At first, I started on my knees just to get comfortable and later I got on my feet to see if I can stay balanced when paddle boarding and I did pretty good for a beginner. I have decided that in the long run I will take this growing sport more serious since it is a good workout.
